What are palmleaf hats?

Palmleaf hats are fast becoming the economical summer cowboy hat of choice. They are durable, all-weather hats which can be washed with soap and water. They are designed to be reshaped as often and in as many different ways as the wearer might choose. Reshaping requires only water and the wearer's hands. They can be reshaped as often as the wearer likes, flattening out the brim to shield from the sun or giving it a nice curve for the Saturday night dance.

What is my size?

In order to measure yourself for a hat, you will need a soft cloth or vinyl tape measure (like that used by tailors) and your head. Take the tape and measure the distance around your head at the position where your hat normally rests (i.e., above the ears and usually fairly low on the forehead). We recommend that you ask another person to help you with this and that you take several measurements. Then use the following chart to determine your hat size depending on whether you are selecting a Guatemalan or Mexican-made hat:

How can I reshape my hat?

Get the hat good and wet, inside and out. Spray it, hold it under the faucet or dunk it in a trough or stream. Then, crease the crown (top) of the hat to your liking. Next, shape the brim side like you want them. For symmetry, try looking at the inside of the crown while shaping the brim. You can shape the brim by rolling the edges toward the crown. It is best to exaggerate the roll as the brim will have a tendency to uncurl some when you let it go. Many people like to personalize the hat with their own special crease. For instance, for a nice front-to-back curve, you can stretch the hat lengthwise with your fingers from the inside while pulling down on the ends of the brim with your thumbs, giving a real bull rider crease to the hat. After drying, the hat will be flexible and remember its new shape if crushed. It will not shrink or stretch but will conform to the shape of your head. Extreme dryness will make the hat brittle, so in dry weather its best to douse the hat occasionally to keep it fresher and make it last longer.
