Imprint Training of the Newborn FoalImprint Training of the Newborn FoalpadProbably one of the most exciting and beneficial breakthroughs in equine psychology and training in the last decade has been the procedure the author calls "imprint training," the behavior-shaping learning process that occurs immediately after a foal's birth. Renowned veterinarian, clinician and lecturer Dr. Robert M. Miller researched, developed and presented these techniques to a world full of horsemen and - women eager to bond with their horses, understand them better and help them to live more comfortably and willingly in a world full of humans. Dr. Miller, like most of us, was taught the conventional wisdom that excessive handling of newborn foals would result in spoiled foals and the risk of rejection by the mare. However, in over 30 years of veterinary practice, he found just the opposite. Foals he was forced to handle because of obstetrical emergencies turned out to be gentle and unafraid of him later on, and they recognized him. Horses, like deer, cattle, sheep and certain fowl, are a "precocial" species and are imprinted by what they see moving around them after they're born. Dr. Miller experimented with his own foals, maximizing their handling at the time of birth to imprint them. He added desensitizing procedures and later conditioned responses to create "imprint training," a technique that's now in use all over the world, with all breeds and other precocial species, as well. This book contains Dr. Miller's theories and techniques, including step-by-step procedures involving bonding, habituation and sensitization. He discusses how to properly handle the mare before, during and after imprinting. There are subsequent sessions detailing how to tie and halter-break the foal, and the added bonus of teaching performance basics that ultimately aid in under-saddle training. Dr. Miller also addresses problems and their prevention, plus the handling of special cases, such as race horses and mules.

Ranch HorsemanshipRanch HorsemanshippadNot every rider yearns to start a colt or participate in a world championship show. Yet most riders want to improve their horsemanship and their horses' performances by helping them become well-broke, seasoned, and versatile mounts, just as many ranch horses are. Ranch Horsemanship tells how almost any rider at almost any level of expertise can adapt ranch-horse-training techniques to help his mount become a safer, more enjoyable ride. Curt's step-by-step methods offer a hands-on and in-your-own-time approach well-suited for most recreational riders. His ideas help prepare you and your horse for whatever you might encounter in the round pen, arena, pasture and beyond. Curt's staring point is an overview of "Ranch Horses and Their Work," which provides a point of reference for the techniques that follow. The "Cowboy Horsemanship" section addresses six important transitions. The ability to make upward and downward transitions, move the hindquarters left and right, and move the forehand left and right are the building blocks necessary to perform any advanced maneuver, such as a side-pass or a lead change. These six transitions also are the basics for maneuvering up- and downhill, approaching natural obstacles and dealing with manmade obstacles, such a gates or bridges, as addressed in the "Practical Applications section." In the fourth section, "Rope- and Cattle-Handling Basics," Curt helps you transfer your working-a-horse-afoot knowledge to cattle work. Even though you might never rope more than a bucket, Curt also walks you through rope-handling basics because that, too, is useful in developing a quiet, well-rounded mount. The book's final section, "Ranch Kids and Competitive Cowboys," relates how using these techniques can help children become safer, more confident riders and how cowboys use the same methods in ranch competitions. Do-it-yourself tips throughout Ranch Horsemanship give practical advice on adapting ranch-training techniques to your acreage, whatever its size.

Ride SmartRide SmartpadCraig Cameron has one of the most loyal followings of any horsemanship clinician and for good reason. Participants who come to his clinics not only get what they came for (a knowledge of horses and horsemanship), but they're also entertained throughout their learning experience. His clinic-goers have clamored for a book and here it is. Under one title, Craig Cameron brings together a thorough look at horses and good, solid horsemanship skills that suit both novice and experienced riders. In the early chapters he delves into the psychological and physical realities of horses as a species and how man can best understand them to develop a positive, partnering relationship with the horse. Next, Cameron covers tack and equipment, horse selection and equitation basics, including exercises to develop a good seat in the saddle, as well as bareback. In the ground-work chapters, he describes effective ground-handling techniques, including round-pen exercises, hobble-breaking methods and longe-line skills. In the under-saddle portion of the book, Cameron takes the reader from the first ride on a green colt all the way through to high-performance maneuvers, such as stops, lead changes, rollbacks and turnarounds. Each chapter includes interesting sidebars that complement the main text. They include: "True Story," personal anecdotes from Cameron's life experience; "Here's How," gentle and helpful training tips; and "A Better Way," troubleshooting sections that provide solutions to common horse-handling problems. Because of his 20-plus years' experience ranching and rodeoing, Cameron is known as the "Cowboy's Clinician." With his original, entertaining and motivational style, he's regularly sought by television, radio, magazines, fairs, ranch rodeos, concerts, universities and many celebrities. Traveling and working out of his Texas and New Mexico ranches, he starts hundreds of colts each year and gives horsemanship clinics on reining, starting horses on cattle and problem-solving. He's built his reputation on understanding the true nature of horses, and his humane training methods eliminate rough handling. That philosophy and those methods are what Cameron offers on the pages of Ride Smart.
