Sam Savitt (1917-2000, inset) is known as one of the most skilled and prolific equine artists in history. As a child when asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, Sam always replied, "I want to be a horse." And so, he did the next best thing: he captured the beauty of horses in his art. Sam's Horse Posters are known throughout the world and his authoritative work has been used in encyclopedias as well as by the Smithsonian Institute. Sam was the official artist of the United States Equestrian Team and a founding and active member of the American Academy of Equine Artists. Sam grew up in Wilkes-Barre, PA. He graduated from Pratt Institute in New York City, spent four years in the United States Army then attended the Art Students League while working as an illustrator of national outdoor magazines. Illustrating horse stories was always his specialty - western in the beginning and later encompassing the entire world of horses. He has illustrated every aspect of horse activity - polo, dressage, racing, steeplechasing, fox hunting, rodeo, show jumping and all breeds.
