 Authentic reproduction of the Pommel, or "Fish", Rain Slickers worn by cowboys as rain gear in the late 1800's and as worn by John Wayne in the 1972 movie, "The Cowboys". It is generally accepted that the pommel slickers were based on rain gear originally used by mariners on the American East Coast made of cloth treated with oils and beeswax to provide waterproofing during heavy storms at sea. While extremely effective as raincoats, the pommel slickers and their maritime ancestors were difficult to maintain, required constant oiling and rewaxing, and could smell bad if the wax turned rancid. Our slicker is produced from material which closely approximates the look and feel of the original Pommel Slickers, but without the fire hazard and without requiring constant oiling and maintenance. (Nevertheless, these slickers should be treated with care and not exposed to intense heat or too much direct sunlight... which is not a problem if they are worn mostly when it rains and kept rolled up and tied on the saddle by saddle strings or hung up in the closet when not in use).
The Pommel Slicker is partially lined, has metal buttons and a corduroy collar and is constructed to be worn over a saddle. This slicker has not been in production for several years, and back then the cost was around $200, but now it is being produced again and is as good as or better than the original design we remember, but at one third the price. Available in sizes S-3XL in "Mustard Yellow" (kind of a yellow-orange color, as shown).
